Top Fruits and Vegetables to Dehydrate

By Armela Patalud - Food and Nutrition

Yesterday was World Vegan Day – a great opportunity to look at food dehydration to ensure those with a plant-based diet (or for anyone really) always have access to fruit and veggies that may not always be available.

Dehydrating is a great way to store fruits or vegetables for longer use so you can enjoy them even when they are out of season.  Below is a list of the top fruits that you can easily dehydrate and enjoy anytime.

Apricots are very nutritious and low in calories.  They are high in antioxidants that have amazing health benefits  especially for the eyes and skin.  They also make a perfect on-the-go snack when dehydrated.

Strawberries are sweet and are perfect to use on baked goodies or smoothies.  Make sure that you always have a stack of these by dehydrating them for longer use.

Peaches can be dehydrated and plumped back to their original state by simply adding water. Now you can enjoy dehydrated or plumped peaches anytime.

Apples are a sweet addition to any snack, salad, baked goodies, and more.  Dehydrating apples means you will always have one handy for times when you need to add something sweet to your snack or dishes.

Bananas can turn into an energy-boosting snack when dehydrated.  You can sprinkle them with a dash of cinnamon or enjoy them straight out of the bag.

Raspberries and Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and essential vitamins and nutrients.  These are a great addition to cereals, muesli, or to any baked goodies.

Cherries are not for garnishing only.  They are also extremely tasty and versatile.  Dehydrate cherries and keep them handy in your pantry just in case you need a sweet and tasty ingredient to liven up your dessert, drinks, or dishes.

Tomatoes especially when dehydrated can be used in so many ways.  Aside from cooking, you can turn them into powder and make your own homemade ketchup or use it as a base for your pasta and pizza sauces.

Dates can be combined with other dehydrated fruits like apples and they can turn into mouthwatering vegan dishes and desserts.

Aside from fruits, the most common vegetables that can easily dehydrate includes beets, carrots, cucumbers, pumpkin, potato, and broccoli.
