Have You Ever Smudged?

So, the first I heard of smudging was when it was recommended to me by a close friend. I had recently moved house, everything was in disarray and I was struggling to relax in my new home. My friend popped over with a Smudge Stick and I followed her as she walked around the house with a smoking stick of herbs. I wondered what on earth she was doing but I instantly felt better and loved the smell too. It’s a ritual which I now enjoy often. Here’s some information for those who are yet to try it.

Where Does Smudging Originate From?

Smudging comes from Native American culture and shamanic tradition. In sacred rites they would burn sage to cleanse and purify their bodies, souls and the environment around them with its smoke. Native traditions relate that wherever sage is used, no evil influences may enter. Throughout history many cultures and religions have burned plants & herbs for positivity and healing effects.

What Benefits Can I Get From Smudging?

Immediately after smudging you should feel better, clearer and more relaxed. Tradition suggests this is because smudging can remove negativity. Burning White Sage may also help clear the air of pollutants, dust and bacteria. That's why it's a great idea to smudge after being unwell. It is also a lovely natural air freshener as Sage has a wonderfully unique scent. Smudging also gives off lots of negative ions which can have positive effects on health and wellbeing.

When Should You Smudge?

There are some occasions when completing a smudging ritual in your home could be helpful. Remember you can smudge anytime of the day or month or year and you can do it as often as you need or want to. Here are a few key times to consider it.

Moving into a new home

After a sickness

After having negative guests over

When you feel stressed or tense

After an argument

After hearing bad news                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            How To Get Started

Choose your smudge stick, Luvin Life offer small, medium or large sizes so you can select based on the size of your home. They use organically grown white sage and their bundles are hand picked rolled and packed.

Ensure you have matches or a lighter with you to light and relight the smudge stick if needed.

Carry a heatproof dish with you to catch any ashes and to extinguish your stick at the end.

Open some windows to let the smoke and negative energy leave easily.

Tips To Complete The Ritual

There appears to be no right or wrong way to smudge your home however please don't rush, allow ample time to enjoy it. It's not essential but you could set your intention before you start by saying out loud. ‘I wish to remove negative energy and cleanse my new home’ or whatever you feel is right for the ceremony. You should slowly move around your home in a clockwise direction gently waving the stick in the air and using your free hand to waft the smoke. Remember to smudge your entire home including corners, behind doors and in cupboards where negative energy can get trapped. Once complete take a moment to sit back and notice how you are feeling.
